Reporter Coryanne Hicks asked advisors for basic investment strategies that have stood the test of time. In the article David Schneider points out that consistent saving is key to success, suggesting investors consider the following hypothetical:

Investor A saves $10,000 per year for 30 years and earns a 7% annual return. She would have over $1 million by the end.

Investor B saves $5,000 per year for 30 years and earns a 9% annual return, but ends up with only $844,000 by year 30.

He states, "This example clearly shows that consistent saving can lead to a wealthier future, even if your investment returns aren't top-tier," adding "It's the steady habit of putting money away that truly builds wealth over time."

He also points out that by spreading your investments across different geographies and investment styles, you can enhance your resilience, and capture returns even when the dominant domestic market struggles.

David Schneider states, "But to be clear, diversification is a risk management strategy, not a risk elimination one," adding "Also, while diversification aims for more consistent long-term performance, there will be periods – often when domestic large companies are strongly in favor – when a broadly diversified portfolio might temporarily underperform a more concentrated one."
